Albania is a republic in the Balkan Peninsula, and is bordered to the west by the Adriatic Sea, to the south and southeast by Greece, to the east by Macedonia, and to the northeast and north by Serbia and Montenegro.
Olympic Tradition:
Albania has been an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member since 1959, but has only competed at the 1972, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 Games and has never won an Olympic medal.
Beijing Outlook:
Freestyle wrestler Sait Prizreni (60kg/132 lbs) tied for third and Elis Guri placed seventh in the Greco Roman (96kg/211.5 lbs) division at the 2007 World Championships.
In the past, weightlifting has been Albania's strongest sport. However, many of its top weightlifters have left the country in the wake of its economic problems.
