It occupies 80 percent of the island of Ireland. Northern Ireland, which is part of Great Britain, occupies the other 20 percent. In 1948, an Irish law withdrew the country from the British Commonwealth. The British Parliament recognized the action but reasserted its claim to incorporate the six northeastern counties - known as Northern Ireland - in the United Kingdom.
